From the Moderator Dear friends, At school, I prepare material for what is nowadays called Collective Worship but most of us still remember as Assemblies. Collective Worship is no longer a hymn, a talk, a telling off and a prayer! Rather, it is an occasion which, at its best (and I cannot always guarantee to achieve that!) moves the pupils to a fresh understanding of themselves and their world. Collective worship is often visual: showing a powerful video of a rescued child in Burma brings compassion for those in need; a stunning picture of a sunset over Druids Heath brings a sense of wonder; the grave face of knife victims Damiola Taylor's father challenges or the winning goal in a cup final will help our pupils reflect on celebration. Pupls do not always anticipate their reaction; and it is always thrilling to see how open pupils are to being moved: to new ways of thinking about their neighbour; to serious questions about their future. Every experience of worship should, at its best, be just the same. Any encounter with God should do these things and more. We should expect to see compassion, challenge, wonder and celebration. However, unlike pupils at school, there is more responsibility upon the community of believers and not just the worship "leaders" So her's a quick question! How does our worship impact upon our attitude to our neighbour and to our future? I'll collect the answers for homework later - and there will be no telling off!! With Kindest Regards. Sior Coleman
